Trend Spotting: Hits and Misses at the MET Ball 2012

Hola, lovelies!
As EVERYONE in fashion (and even some who aren't) knows the MET Ball was held last week and celebs flooded Manhattan in their runway best. Obvious trends of the night ranged from sequins to feathers and while no one managed to show up looking like a complete Vegas showgirl (except for you, Karolina Kurkova, you're debatable) some celebs nailed the look while others completely missed the mark. Here are my hits and misses:

Trend: GOTH GORGEOUS
In this category we have Rihanna looking gorgeous (minus the Ace Ventura hair) in Tom Ford versus Mary Kate Olsen in The Row (her own line) who seemed to have dressed up as a Karl Lagerfeld vampire reincarnation. Although her dress is gorg, the makeup and styling just doesn't do it for me.
Verdict: RiRi takes it!

Trend: SEQUINS
Sequins were obviously very popular, as we have a three-way fight here. Fashion kink! Carey Mulligan stunned in Prada, who was among the honorees for the night (and BONUS! The dress is now available on eBay!), Lea Michele wore a navy sequined Diane von Furstenberg gown and Karolina Kurkova showed up in a champaign colored Rachel Zoe sequined gown with matching turban. If we could subtract the turban and add in its place a braided updo, á la Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman, this might add up to a winning look.
Verdict: Carey Mulligan takes this one, ladies! The dress is impeccable. The hair, the makeup, there are no accessories to outshine the central focus of that stunner! A+ to her team!

Trend: ASYMMETRICAL
We saw the asymmetry trend coming a mile away (or, actually, a year away as it first peaked during the spring 2012 runway shows) and stars brought them out in full force at the MET Ball. In our first tie (because all these looks were just FAR too gorgeous!) we have Gwyneth Paltrow in Prada, Amy Adams in a Giambattista Valli gown from the Spring/Summer 2012 collection and Jessica Alba in a gold lamé Michael Kors gown.
Verdict: All these ladies are winners!

Trend: YELLOW
January Jones (in Atelier Versace Spring/Summer 2012) and Solange Knowles (in Rachel Roy) were obviously in each other's heads (or maybe they share stylists?) because they were both spotted brightening up the ball in Spring's hottest color: Yellow! The bodice on January's gown fits her to perfection and I think we can all agree that yellow is definitely Ms. Solange's color.
Verdict: TIE! Both of these girls dressed to kill!

Trend: VAMPY LIPS
A surprising number of stars brought out the vampy lip; a look I absolutely love!! Now that the vampire movies are drawing to a close, it's fashion mavens to the rescue to keep the culture alive! The look worked flawlessly for a few stars, like Camilla Belle (in Ralph Lauren) and Kate Bosworth (in Prada) and not so much for others, like Rooney Mara (who's entire look was a dud) and Leighton Meester (in Marchesa Autumn/Winter 2012) who usually shines. Blair Waldorf would pour yogurt in your hair and  kick you off the MET steps, STAT!

Trend: FEATHERS
Feathers seemed to be the biggest trend of the night. Kate Bosworth stunned in an ostrich-feather Prada number as did Cate Blanchett. Hail, hail the C(K)ate's! They were right on the money! Feathered frocks I didn't entirely love were Diane Kruger's Prada ostrich feather gown or (don't kill me!) Beyonce's Givenchy. Diane's feathers are obviously too heavy and its pulling down the top of the dress giving it a droopy, unpolished look. I actually don't entirely loathe B's look (I love the natural face and simple hair, anything to intricate would've bordered on prom-y.) What lost it for me was the visible spanx and the feathers seemed to begin at a very awkward place. The spanx situation could've been solved with an extra sheer lining or a spanx in a color more suited to her skin tone. And I get showing off her incredible post-baby figure but starting the feathers higher to show the thigh but not the knee would've just created a better look. Sorry Mr. Tisci, this look just doesn't do it for me.

And in leagues all their own (major and minor, if you know what I mean) we have stars that shine bright..
Sarah Jessica Parker in a stunning floral frock from Valentino's Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Side note: Her steam girl needs to be fired ASAP! She's older than the dress and she doesn't have that many wrinkles!

Chanel Iman looked drop dead gorgeous in a Tom Ford cutout dress. No wonder she scored the designer as her date!

..and some stars burnt out quicker than tires at NASCAR:
Jessica Biel wore a Prada shift dress that wasn't awful but just wasn't for the MET. That coupled with the bleh hair and makeup just ruins it for me. What is with those bangs!?!

Eva Mendes seems to have gotten lost on her way to a quinceñera in her Prada gown. And her tan seems to match her bright orange dress. No, Eva. Just no.

And that's my take on things! Who did you love? More importantly, who did you loathe?
Next up, Chanel at Versailles. Did Lagerfeld deliver?

xox,
Prima
