(Just like from my favorite show, 30 Rock!)
This jewelry holder was inspired by a beautiful, but terribly overpriced, holder I saw on Hautelook a couple weeks ago. Theirs was a bit different - it had vinyl in place of the mesh I used, and the fabric covered the entire hanger in their model. Since I already made a couple at-home jewelry holders I decided to make one that could travel with me as well and thus, this was born.
Instructions are below if you'd like to make your own.
For this project you'll need:
- Fabric
- Batting
- Mesh or Tulle
- Scissors
- Pins
- 4 Buttons
- Cut out two 20" x 17" pieces of fabric and one piece of batting with the same measurements.
- Place the two pieces of fabric, right side facing right side, on top of the batting. Pin three sides to each other. Sew with a zigzag stitch.
- Tulle, stacked three times over
- Fabric, right side up
- Batting
When all three of the sides are completely sewn, it should look like this, inside out:
And like this when it is turned right side out:
3. Be sure to pull your corners all the way out. You can use a pin for this.
4. Fold over the top unstitched portion twice and the sew with a zigzag stitch.
5. Topstitch 1/4" from the edge around the entire perimeter. It should look like this.
5. Topstitch 1/4" from the edge around the entire perimeter. It should look like this.
6. Cut out two 6" x 3" pieces of fabric. Place pieces on top of each other, right sides together and sew three of the four sides.
7. Fold under the unstitched 3" end and pin it to the middle of the top of the meshed fabric. Sew on top of the meshed fabric.
8. Use a buttonhole stitch to stitch horizontally across the lower 1/3 of the holder.
9. Cut only the first layer of mesh directly beneath the bottom buttonhole stitch. The result should look like a huge pocket.
10. Fold down the fabric once in the middle of the "pocket" you just cut and sew a zig zag stitch to separate it into two pockets.
11. Sew a button onto the back part (the portion that is still attached to the main part) of each pocket. Cut a small hole, big enough for the button to fit snugly through, in the separated part of the pocket. Put in your "un-hangable jewelry" (watches, bangles, rings, etc.) and snap closed with the button.
12. Sew a buttonhole stitch into the strap attached at the top.
13. Fold over the holder and use the strap at the top to estimate where the closing button on the underside should go. Sew a button here.
14. Do the same for the back upper portion of the holder so that it is able to hang on a hanger when closed, like so.
And that's it! If you try this, share pics!
